Stone Coal Creek is a protected wildland in western Virginia’s George Washington and Jefferson National Forests, about five miles east of New Castle on both sides of North Mountain’s ridge. Centered on the upper drainage of Stone Coal Creek, it is recognized by the Wilderness Society as a Mountain Treasure for its scenic, ecological, and remote character. Old logging roads and railroad grades from the early twentieth century remain in the forest, and the area offers broad views across the Great Valley of Virginia. It also serves as an important wildlife corridor, contains some old-growth trees and possible karst soils, and remains significant because its long-term protection depends on federal land-management choices.
