North Mountain is a protected, largely roadless tract in the George Washington and Jefferson National Forests of western Virginia, valued for secluded recreation and conservation within the Appalachian Mountains. Part of the Craig Creek Cluster and recognized as a Mountain Treasure, it is accessed mainly by difficult trails while old logging roads and railroad grades recall intensive early twentieth-century timbering. Its Ridge and Valley terrain spans sandstone ridges, steep drainages, and varied forests, including notable table mountain pine habitat maintained through prescribed burning. North Mountain also supports rare species and remains managed chiefly for backcountry non-motorized use under roadless-area protections.
