Beaver County saw a long series of local firsts beginning on March 5, 1793, when the Grand Lodge of Pennsylvania granted Warrant #58 to officers and men camping at Legion Ville, creating the county's first Free Masons Lodge. On April 21, 1794, Service Theological Seminary, located in present-day Raccoon Township, became the first seminary west of the Allegheny Mountains and only the second in the nation. In 1802, Greersburg Academy in Darlington, established by the Erie Presbytery, became the first academy west of the Alleghenies, and William McGuffey was its most famous student. The Minerva, published in Beaver every Saturday, became the first known newspaper in the county on November 4, 1807, and the next day the first murder trial in Beaver County was held when Nathaniel Eakin was charged and acquitted for the shooting death of James Hamilton. On November 4, 1812, St. James's Lodge in Beaver became the first Masonic Lodge permanently established in Beaver County. In 1838, men in New Brighton formed the Mechanics Fire Company as the county's first firemen. In 1848, Dr. Acker founded the Water Cure Sanitorium in Phillipsburg, now Monaca, as the county's first hospital. In December 1860, oil was discovered near Smith's Ferry in the areas of Upper Dry Run and Island Run, marking Beaver County's first oil well. Thiel College, founded in Monaca in 1866, was the county's first college. Bridgewater Gas Company became the first supplier of natural gas for fuel and lighting on November 19, 1883, and Beaver Valley Electric Light and Power Company became the first commercial supplier of electric power in the county on November 19, 1888, after building a power plant on the Beaver River. Carnegie Free Library, built on 7th Avenue in Beaver Falls in 1903, became the county's first public library building, and in 1904 Beaver Falls, New Brighton, and Geneva Preparatory schools formed the first formal football league. On January 1, 1906, J. N. Jarvis organized the French Point Street Railway Company in Ambridge and operated the county's first streetcar. Patterson Heights Airfield opened in 1919 as the county's first airfield. Old Economy Village officially opened to the public on June 26, 1921, as the first historic site for the Pennsylvania Historical Commission, now PHMC. Montgomery Island Lock and Dam, completed and dedicated on June 16, 1936, on the Ohio River opposite Industry, was the first non-navigable, high-lift gated structure built on the Ohio River. WBVP became Beaver County's first radio station in 1948. Northern Lights opened in 1956 as the area's first major shopping center, and Beaver Valley Mall opened in 1970 as the first indoor shopping mall in Beaver County. In 2000, Pennsylvania Cyber Charter School in Midland became the county's first online school and the first in Pennsylvania to accept students from across the state. On May 21, 2014, Beaver County began issuing marriage licenses to same sex couples.
