During 1941-1943, thousands of young Royal Air Force aviation cadets were stationed at Albany, Georgia, and trained at Darr Aero Tech and Turner Field, military pilot training bases south and east of Albany, to become combat pilots in defense of Britain and the wider world. Many were befriended in Albany and nearby homes, churches, clubs, and businesses. Some of these young British cadets died in aerial pilot training accidents in the skies and fields of Southwest Georgia, and their sacrifice was honored as no less significant because they perished far from combat and far from home.
