Thronateeska Heritage Center in Albany, Georgia, grew from the merger of the Southwest Georgia Historical Society and the Albany Junior Museum and was incorporated as a nonprofit in 1974. Rooted in a name long associated with the Flint River and an earlier Creek village, it took shape through local efforts to revive Albany’s old railroad depot area. Its campus combines history and science through museums, a rail car display, a planetarium, and public archives. Its greatest significance lies in preserving Albany’s railroad landmarks, including Union Station, the Tift Warehouse, the Railway Express Agency building, and the historic depot district.
