In 1916, Dr. Harry Wegeforth worked tirelessly with vision and determination to create a world-class zoo that became the pride of San Diego and is enjoyed by millions of visitors each year. The San Diego Zoo’s centennial celebrated that achievement and honored special friends whose investment in the next 100 years was intended to provide the brightest possible future for its animals and plants. Harry M. Wegeforth, M.D., born in 1882 and died in 1941, founded the Zoological Society of San Diego and served as president of its board of directors from 1916 to 1941.
