Mountain Lakes Wilderness is a protected area in the Fremont–Winema National Forest in Oregon’s southern Cascade Range, notable as the only wilderness area in the United States with square boundaries matching a single survey township. Its landscape is built around four overlapping shield volcanoes, with Aspen Butte reaching 8,208 feet, and bears strong glacial shaping near the upper slopes, where cirques contain more than 20 small lakes. The area’s significance lies in this compact combination of volcanic massifs and glacial basins. It also supports hiking, cross-country skiing, camping, and fishing, with several lakes regularly stocked with trout.
