The 148th Fighter Squadron, Pennsylvania's first Air National Guard squadron, was formed on Feb. 27, 1947 at Gen. Carl A. Spaatz Field with 10 officers and 13 enlisted men. Its members first flew propeller planes and later jet aircraft. More than 300 men were called to active duty on Feb. 1, 1951, and some gave their lives during the Korean Conflict. The unit returned to Spaatz Field on Nov. 1, 1952.
