Founded in 1877, this trail served travel from Tascosa on the Canadian, 25 miles southwest, to Dodge City, Kansas. Tascosa was a supply center for hunters and settlers in the Panhandle and South Plains and for the LE, LIT, LS, and LX ranches, which ran large herds of cattle on the area's free grass. The road was used by the Tascosa stagecoach, freighters, and cattle herds going to market, and it was also traveled by gamblers, desperadoes, U.S. Marshals, and noted frontiersmen. Tascosa had a post office in 1878 and became the county seat of Oldham County in 1880. The town and trail declined after the Fort Worth and Denver City Railway was built into the area in 1887.
