Johnsons Creek Natural Area Preserve
Nature
Johnsons Creek Natural Area Preserve is a 99-acre protected area in Alleghany County, Virginia, on steep shale bluffs above Johnsons Creek. It conserves a rare shale barrens landscape, an uncommon eastern United States natural community marked by thin soils, south-facing slopes, and hot, dry conditions. Ancient red cedars grow there with oaks and pines, and the preserve also safeguards rare plants such as shale-barren rockcress, Boechera serotina. First purchased by The Nature Conservancy, the land was dedicated as a Natural Area Preserve in 1990 and is now owned and maintained by the Virginia Department of Conservation and Recreation.
