In this area Joseph Kitchell, who settled here in 1817, erected a grist mill and distillery that eliminated the trip to Shakertown, Indiana, where farmers had previously taken their grain. Horses were used for power, grain was taken in pay, converted to whiskey, and sold to the settlers.
