The Riverton Site in eastern Illinois is a Late Archaic settlement dating from 3000 to 1000 BCE and the type site of the Riverton culture in the central Wabash Valley. Archaeological evidence includes house floors, hearths, storage pits, and a manufacturing area with pits and discarded tools, indicating a settled community of about 50 to 100 people. Riverton is also among the earliest and best known places of extensive cultivation in the eastern United States. By about 1800 BCE, Native Americans there were growing several native plants, and chenopod seeds with unusually thin husks show selective breeding for easier food processing.
