The Reihle family once farmed what is now Pike Lake State Park, and in 1864 Auselein Reihle lost her son and husband during the Civil War. Days after she heard of her husband's death, a wounded and delirious Union soldier mysteriously appeared at her property, having hobbled two miles from a nearby inn. He never recovered despite her treatment, and because he carried no identifying information, Auselein buried him on the farm. The family's story shows how the Civil War touched Ohioans even in unexpected ways. Ohioans played an integral role in the Union victory during the American Civil War from 1861 to 1865, with 310,654 serving in the Union army. Although the state was spared major combat, Ohio's only significant Civil War battle at Buffington Island in 1863 marked the turning point in Confederate general John Morgan's destructive raid across southern Ohio, after which he was later captured in Columbiana County. Some Ohioans, including future U.S. presidents Ulysses S. Grant and Rutherford B. Hayes, rose to prominence during the conflict, and 35,475 Ohioans, including this unknown soldier, died over the course of the war.
