Norton County is a brecciated aubrite meteorite named for Norton County, Kansas, where it fell on February 18, 1948. Announced by a brilliant fireball and loud noise, the shower scattered fragments across a wide area of Kansas and into nearby Furnas County, Nebraska. Beginning on April 28, a University of New Mexico research team worked to identify and recover pieces, which were then donated to or sold to the university. Classified as a calcium-poor aubrite fragmental breccia, it is best known for its main mass, about 1,070 kilograms, now displayed as the centerpiece of the University of New Mexico's meteorite exhibit in Albuquerque.
