Screamer Mountain, a 2,972-foot peak in Rabun County near Clayton in northeastern Georgia, is known both as the birthplace of Logan E. Bleckley and for folklore attached to its name. One Cherokee tale tells of a Native American woman screaming from the summit through the night, while another says a woman leaped from the mountaintop rather than be removed from Georgia at the beginning of the Trail of Tears in 1838. In 1971, Modern States Life Insurance Co. purchased the entire mountain. It remains a named summit in the Clayton area, associated with haunting legend and local history.
