Snake Mountain, also known as Grand View Mountain, is an isolated peak in western Vermont whose striking cliffs and summit views reflect a deep geological past. Formed through ancient faulting, erosion, and the retreat of glacial Lake Vermont, it once stood as a small island above the surrounding waters. In the late 19th century, Jonas N. Smith developed the mountain as a resort, building the Grand View Hotel, an observation tower, and a carriage road to attract summer visitors. That resort era faded in the early 20th century, and the summit land was acquired by Vermont in 1988. Today the old road serves hikers instead of hotel guests.
