Fort Mountain in northern Georgia is known for an ancient stone wall near its crest, a line of unmortared stone piles whose origin remains uncertain. Often regarded as the remains of a fort or other built structure, the wall is now generally associated with an older Indigenous culture, with archaeologists linking it to the Middle Woodland period, roughly 100 BCE to 500 CE. It may have served either defensive or ceremonial purposes. Because of its value for understanding prehistoric life, the site was placed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1977. The mountain is also noted for its scenic state park, summit fire tower, and overlooks.
