Milo Academy Bridge

Milo Academy Bridge in Milo, Oregon, spans the South Umpqua River to reach Milo Adventist Academy and preserves the appearance of a traditional covered bridge while using unusual construction. The original wooden covered bridge, built in 1920, reflected Oregon’s long reliance on Douglas fir and covered designs that protected timber from wet weather. In 1962, the academy replaced that bridge with a 100-foot single-lane steel truss to carry heavier farm vehicles, but local concern for the familiar landmark led to the old covering being fitted onto the new span. The result is Oregon’s only covered bridge built around a steel truss, a rare survivor recognized in 1979.
