In Snow Hill, Maryland, the Julia A. Purnell Museum preserves more than 500 years of local history in the former St. Agnes Catholic Church, completed in 1891. It honors Julia Anne LeCompte Purnell, a Snow Hill resident born in 1843 who became known for needlework she produced in her 80s and 90s, creating more than 1,000 pieces, many showing local homes, churches, and gardens. The museum began in 1942 when her son William opened a small display of her work on his property, and the collection moved to the old church in 1957. It also holds William's unusual collected objects and artifacts from early Snow Hill and Worcester County life.
