Escanaba developed around a top-rated natural harbor formed by a deep channel and the protection of the natural break waters of Sand Point. From the town's beginning, timber was shipped from this harbor, and lake schooners dominated its colorful, bustling scene as they carried lumber from Michigan saw mills to destinations along the Great Lakes. From this spot stood the dock for the I. Stephenson Co., a logging giant based in Wells. The Union, a schooner owned by Escanaba fisherman Nate Sanders, made 2 to 3 trips to Chicago each fall carrying fish caught by Nate and his brother Jack. On one trip, Nate entered a daredevil race with a larger ship, pushed the Union so hard that he "sailed her under," and capsized, though he was fortunate to be one of Delta County's more prosperous fishermen.
