Glen Alpine Springs trailhead
Nature
Glen Alpine Springs trailhead near Fallen Leaf Lake, west of Lake Tahoe, provides seasonal access from Highway 89 into the Desolation Wilderness, including routes to Grass Lake and Susie Lake. It is also closely connected to the historic Glen Alpine Springs property about a mile farther up the trail. Founded by Nathan Gilmore in 1863, Glen Alpine Springs was one of Tahoe’s earliest resorts and later became associated with John Muir’s visits in 1890 and 1892. Much of its surviving architecture dates to the 1920s, when Bernard Maybeck designed six of its eight buildings. Since 1987, the property has been preserved by a nonprofit supported entirely by donations.
