Washoe Meadows State Park, south of Lake Tahoe, preserves more than 600 acres of meadow and woodland along the Truckee River corridor, giving it a quieter character than much of the Tahoe basin. Established in 1984 to prevent expansion of the Lake Tahoe Golf Course across the river, it reflects both conservation and the enduring connection of the Washoe people, for whom it is named. In 2023, that relationship was reaffirmed through an agreement involving the Washoe Tribe of Nevada and California State Parks. The park also gained attention for nesting sandhill cranes and had a brief film role in Top Gun: Maverick in 2018.
