John Bragg was born in Upland, Indiana, and spent most of his youth in Fort Wayne, where annual play in the Fort Wayne summer baseball league developed his athletic skills and competitive spirit. He graduated from South Side High School in 1946 as a standout basketball and track athlete, then served in the Navy from 1946 to 1948 as a Morse code specialist aboard the minesweeper USS Macomb. After transferring from Butler University, he played basketball at Taylor University for Coach Don Odle from 1948 to 1952, graduated with a degree in education, earned notice for his jump shot, and played alongside his cousins Ted Wright and Kenny Wright, with John and Ted often leading the team in scoring during an excellent senior season. In the 1950s he played professional basketball for the Anderson No. 1 Beverage team in the Indiana Pro Basketball League. He taught sixth grade at Matthews Elementary from 1952 to 1954, where he played ball with students and encouraged their athletic pursuits, and one class he taught later established the Taylor University John F. Bragg 52 Endowed Scholarship Fund to help Eastbrook graduates attending Taylor University. From 1954 to 1965 he taught at Jefferson Township High School and coached basketball, track, and baseball. With sponsorship from the Lions Club, he helped initiate the summer baseball league in Upland, engaging youth of all ages in instruction and play while coaching high school players in competition with other towns and driving the bus. When consolidation formed Eastbrook High School in 1965, he became the school's first Athletic Director and started the football program during his tenure. He later served Eastbrook as Assistant Principal, Business Manager, and Interim Superintendent before retiring in 1994 after a 42-year educational career.
