Mount Konocti, a volcano on Clear Lake’s south shore in Lake County, California, rises 4,305 feet as the second highest peak in the Clear Lake Volcanic Field and a dominant regional landmark. Though often called extinct, the U.S. Geological Survey classifies it as High Threat Potential. It likely first erupted about 350,000 years ago and last around 11,000 years ago, with lava flows helping shape nearby terrain. Long home to Pomo and Wappo communities, the mountain also carries Pomo linguistic and oral traditions. After generations of mostly private ownership, conservation battles and public land purchases led to protected areas and the opening of Mount Konocti County Park in 2011.
