Artifacts made in Coatesville by Lukens steelworkers were returned there and designated for public display as the World Trade Center Trees, serving as a reminder of the events of 9/11 and as a tribute to the victims, survivors, and first responders in New York on that September day in 2001. Their display was to be designed by museum planners, conservators, architects, and engineers to emphasize their patriotic and national symbolism while connecting them to the history and importance of the American steel industry, especially Lukens Steel Company in Coatesville.
