An iron Admiralty anchor associated with the Port Jefferson Village Center was found by the Research Vessel Seawolf while trawling south of the entrance to Ambrose Channel. Dating from between 1890 and 1910, it came from a vessel about 180 feet long and weighing around 1300 tons. This anchor type was developed by the British Navy in the 1840s, adopted in the mid-1840s, and was commonly used by vessels built in Port Jefferson in the 1850s. Also known as a kedge, it remains in use for small boats and moorings because it has great holding power in sandy or muddy sea floors. Ambrose Channel is the main shipping channel in and out of the Port of New York and New Jersey, part of Lower New York Bay, several miles off Sandy Hook, New Jersey, and Breezy Point, Queens, in New York, and it ends at Ambrose Anchorage just south of the Verrazano Narrows Bridge, the gateway to New York Harbor.
