Freedom Township's war dead and veterans included Revolutionary War soldiers Michael Dodson, born Sept. 6, 1751, who enlisted July 20, 1776 at Taneytown, Md. in Capt. Good's company, also served in 1777 in Capt. Lansdale's company, and fought at Brandwine, Germantown, and White Plains; Thomas Dodson, born May 11, 1741, whose records are unavailable; Nicholas McGuire, born 1753 in Freedom Township, a veteran whose service records are not available and whose headstone says, "He served his country in Revolutionary War and died esteemed by his neighbors"; and Jacob Schmitt, Sr., born 1750, a private in Capt. William Clark's company of Rangers, Bedford County Militia, who died in 1797. Civil War losses were Jacob Helsel, a private in the 55th Pa. Vol. Inf., captured at the Battle of Wilderness on Sept. 18, 1864 and dead of starvation at Andersonville Prison, Georgia, in 1864; Martin Nofsker, a private in Co. I, 55 Pa. Vol. Inf., captured at Durry [sic - Drewry's] Bluff, Va., on May 16, 1864 and dead of starvation at Millen, Ga.; and Samuel H. Smith, a private in Co. I, 55th Pa. Vol. Inf., captured at the Battle of Petersburg, Va., on June 15, 1864 and dead of starvation at Libby Prison, Richmond, Va., in 1864. In World War I, Robert A. Corl, private, 110 U.S. Inf. Army, age 24, was killed in action on Aug. 25, 1918 in Argonne Forest, France, and John B. Ernest, private, 18 U.S. Inf. Army, age 25, was killed in action on Feb. 26, 1918 in Argonne Forest, France. In World War II, James Albert Hainzey, PFC. U.S. Marine Corps, age 26, was killed in action on May 15, 1945 at Okinawa - Pacific; Harry Raymond Harr, Cpl. U.S. Army, age 24, was killed in action on June 5, 1945 at Mindanao - Pacific; Earl John Lanzendorfer, PFC. U.S. Marine Corps, age 21, was killed in action on Sept. 24, 1944 at Palau - Pacific; James [E]. Reimer, PFC. U.S. Paratroops, 82nd Airborne Div., age 22, died non-battle on Dec. 17, 1944 in England; and Maurice Yingling, Sgt. 2nd Div. U.S. Army, age 29, was killed in action on Dec. 18, 1944 in Belgium. In the Korean War, Thomas Vincent Dodson, Sgt. 7th U.S. Div. U.S. Army, age 36, was killed in action on Nov. 30, 1950 at Changjin Reservoir, Korea; Clair Eugene Flaugh, Pvt. U.S. Air Force, age 19, died on Dec. 23, 1950 in the United States; and Ronald Paul Leighter, PFC. U.S. Army, age 22, died on Sept. 15, 1956 in the United States. Freedom Township had no casualties in the Vietnam War or Persian Gulf.
