Saint Mary’s College is the oldest extant Catholic college for men west of the Alleghanies and the third oldest in the nation. It was founded in 1821 by the Reverend William Byrne. It was conducted by the Jesuit Fathers from 1833 to 1846, by the Holy Cross Fathers from 1846 to 1848, and by the Diocesan Fathers from 1848 to 1869. It was closed from 1869 to 1871. It has been directed by the Resurrection Fathers since 1871.
