Camp Allegany, one of Allegany State Park's 12 group camps, was constructed in 1928 as Group Camp 11 with a mess hall that also served as a recreation hall, five barracks consisting of double cabins, a swimming pool, playing fields, a spring house, a wash shed, and three single latrines. Between 1928 and 1935 it was rented to different organizations, including the Boy Scouts and YMCA. In 1935, Camp Sprucelands, an equestrian camp for girls, was established there, and after the directors moved to Java Center in 1946, Group Camp 11 continued to be called Sprucelands and remained an equestrian camp for a number of years. Between 1977 and 1982, Allegany State Park's Young Adult Conservation Corps camp worked on trail, forestry, and construction projects and also improved Group Camp 11 by relocating old barracks, rehabilitating the mess hall, and constructing a new recreation building and first aid cabin, after which it became the Y.A.C.C.'s base of operation. From 1982 to 1993, the S.U.N.Y. School of Environmental Science and Forestry leased Camp Allegany as a forestry field station, used it for beaver research for 15 years, and operated there with a classroom building constructed in 1986 while schools and other groups could also arrange to use the camp. After 1993, B.O.C.E.S. and other groups, including the Cattaraugus County Mental Health Association, the Buffalo Museum of Science, scouting groups, and Nature Ed-Ventures, offered educational programs there, with visits ranging from day trips to longer stays, and the year-round camp became known for a maple sugaring program offered throughout March.
