B.F. Colbert owned the ferry at the old Red River crossing 3 miles south. It was a noted stop on the Butterfield Overland Mail line, organized in 1857, the first U.S. mail route by stage between the cities of St. Louis and San Francisco. The Colbert post office was established here on Nov. 17, 1853, with Walter D. Collins as postmaster.
