The north span was the first free bridge across the Red River, erected in 1931 and replaced in 1996. Oklahoma Gov. "Alfalfa" Bill Murray defied a Federal Court injunction and plowed up the road to a toll bridge, forcing the opening of the free bridge linking Texas and Oklahoma highways. Governor Murray came personally to oversee the bridge opening. The conflict involved the Oklahoma National Guard and the Texas Rangers.
