Since the opening of Tourmaline Canyon Surfing Park in May 1963, surfers there have embraced the beach, surf, and camaraderie, sharing their time, skills, and wisdom with those interested in receiving them. Within Tourmaline culture, great surfers and fine men and women have grown up and carried the positive traits learned there into their own lives and those of people around them. The community is associated with the spirit of “Surf Well, Spread Aloha, Share Waves Without Judgment,” and honors Skip Frye, Larry Gordon, Floyd Smith, Bobby “Challenger” Thomas, Billie “Goldie” Goldsmith, Bud Caldwell, William “Hadji” Hein, Captain Dan O'Connell, Emil Sigler, Joe Gann, Ralph Barber, Holly “Papa Smurf” Jones, Woody Brown, Skeeter Malcolm, Doc Blankenship, Ralph Dawson, Ron Saint John, Norm Polonski, Bo Smith, Doc Paskowitz, Mike Hynson, Pacific Beach Surf Club, Kanakas Surf Club, WindanSea Surf Club, and Tourmaline Tailgaters.
