Mount Soledad is a prominent San Diego hill rising 823 feet between Interstate 5 and the Pacific Ocean, with steep slopes along the Rose Canyon Fault and broad visibility across the city. Long valued as a scenic destination, landmark, and approach point for aircraft, its summit is most famous for the Mount Soledad Cross, first built in 1913 and dedicated in its present form in 1954. After being designated a Korean War memorial, the cross became the center of a prolonged legal fight over religious symbols on public land that ended after the site was sold in 2015 and the case was dismissed in 2016. The summit also hosts broadcast transmitters and remains a well-known cycling and viewing destination.
