Founded in 1890 by Franklin Fairbanks in St. Johnsbury, Vermont, the Fairbanks Museum and Planetarium grew from his collections into a multifaceted institution spanning natural history, history, science, and astronomy. Its Richardsonian Romanesque main building opened in 1891 and later expanded as the collections grew. Today it holds about 175,000 objects, from fossils and taxidermy to industrial artifacts and meteorological materials. Longstanding weather observations at the site developed into the Eye on the Sky Weather Center, serving the region with forecasts. Its planetarium, opened in 1961, remains Vermont’s only public planetarium, and the institution continues to expand through exhibits, outreach, and science education.
