In 1883, Theodore N. Vail bought a farmhouse on this site and continually enlarged it until it became his permanent residence and office. Conferences held here culminated in the creation of the American Telephone and Telegraph Company, with Vail as its president, and he then proceeded to develop the world’s first mass communication system.
