George Wharton Marriott of London was one of the earliest and most devoted English friends of Kenyon College. Through him Bishop Chase knew Lord Kenyon, Doctor Gaskin and Lady Rosse. In his honor these grounds were named in 1826 Marriott Park and he suggested for its entrance gate the inscription Inter Sylvas Academi Quaerere Verum.
