Muhlenberg County was formed in 1798 from parts of Logan and Christian counties and was named for Gen. Peter Muhlenberg, 1746-1807, of Pa. Ordained a minister in 1768, he was associated with the words, "A time to preach and a time to fight." He entered the Revolutionary Army as Col. of the Eight Va. (German) Regt. and was active from 1776 to the surrender of Yorktown. He later served in the U.S. Congress and Senate and as Collector of Customs in Phila. Many from his regiment later pioneered here.
