Skegemog Point Site on the Samels Farm near Williamsburg, Michigan, preserves more than 10,000 years of human activity, from Paleo-Indian through Archaic to Late Woodland occupation. Its importance lies in an unusual horizontal stratification caused by glacial rebound, which shifted the shoreline and left the oldest materials farthest from the present water and later remains closer to it. Investigations from the 1920s through excavations in 1965 confirmed a long sequence of habitation, including hearths, artifacts, seeds, and circular postmolds interpreted as temporary or seasonal wigwam-type structures. The site is also preserved as an education center and valued for its clear record of changing shorelines in northern Michigan.
