The Dennos Museum Center in Traverse City, on the campus of Northwestern Michigan College, opened in 1991 as a fine art museum and cultural center shaped by two earlier efforts: Bernie Rink’s Inuit art collection begun in 1960 and a 1980s campaign to create a dedicated arts venue. Named for Barbara and Michael Dennos after a $6.5 million community fundraising drive, it became one of the first public Inuit art collections in the United States. Its defining strength is a large permanent collection of Inuit prints and sculptures, complemented by changing exhibitions, performing arts programming, outdoor sculpture, and a 2018 expansion that enlarged its Inuit gallery.
