Strasenburgh Planetarium, part of the Rochester Museum and Science Center at 663 East Avenue in Rochester, New York, opened in 1968 after decades of planning for a local planetarium dating back to 1935. Named for benefactors Edwin and Clara Strasenburgh, it was made possible by their gift of more than one million dollars in 1964. Designed by Carl F. W. Kaelber Jr., the building featured a spiral form and a central 65-foot Star Theater. The theater housed the first Zeiss Mark VI planetarium projector, still in daily use, and the institution gained worldwide attention as the first planetarium to be computer automated.
