Arts & Culture
In Rochester, New York, the George Eastman Museum unites George Eastman’s former estate with one of the world’s important centers for photography and film. Opened to the public in 1949 in Eastman’s house and grounds, it is the oldest museum dedicated to photography and among the oldest film archives. The estate, a large and technically advanced early-twentieth-century residence, later became a National Historic Landmark. The museum grew from major early collections into an internationally significant institution for collecting, preservation, scholarship, and exhibition, with vast holdings in photographs, films, cinematic objects, and Eastman history, while the house itself preserves Eastman’s domestic world.
