Built by the Security Improvement Company in the Richardsonian Romanesque style, the Security Building exemplified the well-designed commercial buildings of the Great Dakota Boom of the 1800s. Five stories tall and supported by a stone foundation, its front facade featured a two-bay rusticated stone arcade entrance of Syrian arches, and it was remembered for its distinctive pink colored stone and brick. Early occupants included North Western College of Commerce, North Dakota's first vocational school, prominent architect J.W. Ross, and the Knights of Pythias. Later occupants included wholesaler C.H. Robinson, UND School of Law, the YMCA, and early Grand Forks city offices and federal courts. At its demise, the building housed a diverse group of tenants including a barber shop and a boxing organization. It was placed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1982 and was flooded and burned on April 19, 1997.
