Vacaria Baja was the home and ranch of Don Manuel Gonzalez, located one-half mile east. It consisted of 1600 arpents conceded by Spanish Governor José Masot on Dec. 22, 1817. It lay on the route of Andrew Jackson in 1814, 1818, and in 1821, when General and Mrs. Jackson spent three weeks as guests of Gonzalez while awaiting transfer of Florida to United States. Because of yellow fever in Pensacola, it became the temporary seat of government in September 1822.
