In 1805, Zechariah Butterfield, Jesse Doolittle, Medad Canfield, Hart Massey, Henry Coffeen, Isaiah Massey, Jonathan Cowan, and Aaron Keyes donated for the free use of the people forever the land in Watertown now known as Public Square, formerly called the Mall.
