Merced Grove Ranger Station, completed in 1935 near the Merced Grove of giant sequoias in Yosemite’s Crane Flat area, is a notable example of National Park Service rustic architecture designed to blend with the surrounding forest. Built to replace a 1915 checking station on the Coulterville Road, it drew on Sierra foothill pioneer log cabins but was crafted with unusual refinement, using tightly fitted adzed logs without chinking and distinctive sloped log ends. Though small, with basic living quarters and nearby outhouses, it served both as a ranger station and a summer retreat for Yosemite superintendents. It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1978.
