On Aug. 13, 1896, Butch Cassidy and his Wild Bunch robbed Montpelier's bank of more than $16,500 in gold, silver, and currency, then calmly rode away, leaving behind a surprised cashier and terrified customers. A deputy sheriff borrowed a bicycle and tried to pursue them up Montpelier canyon but was quickly outdistanced. Cassidy was never caught, but Bob Meeks was imprisoned until 1912 for helping in the robbery.
