On the hot afternoon of August 23, 1896, Butch Cassidy and two members of his Wild Bunch Gang, Elza Lay and Bob Meeks, robbed the Bank of Montpelier. After a casual drink or two, they reached the bank just before closing time and tied up their horses across the street. Cashier G.C. Gray was standing on the steps talking with a friend when Cassidy and Lay left Meeks with the horses, crossed the street, and suddenly pushed the banker and his friend into the bank. Inside, they forced pay teller A.N. Mackintosh and a girl stenographer up against the wall while Lay covered the personnel with guns and Cassidy scooped money into a gunny sack. Mackintosh, facing the wall, looked out the window and noticed Meeks by the horses before Lay struck him across the face while trying to make him reveal where other money was located; Mackintosh's description later led to Meeks's arrest and conviction. Cassidy left first with the money, walked calmly across the street, mounted his horse, and rode slowly away. Meeks then moved across the street with the remaining horses, leaving Lay's horse in front of the bank, and rode away, and Lay finally hurried out. As soon as Lay cleared the bank, the alarm spread and pandemonium erupted. Deputy Fred Cruikshank, first on a bicycle and then on horseback, gave chase with Attorney Bagley, and minutes later Sheriff Jefferson Davis and a posse pursued the robbers up Montpelier Canyon. The posse followed for a week before giving up near Snyder Basin. No one really knows what happened to the money or exactly where the men went. Meeks later swore he never got any of the loot, and he was the only one ever arrested; Cassidy and Lay were never brought to trial. Reports of the amount stolen have long differed, ranging from $7,000 to $16,500. Mackintosh said that the number 13 was the cause of it all: it was the 13th day of the month, it happened after the 13th deposit of the day for $13.00, and it occurred 13 minutes after 3:00 p.m.
