The John H. Pickens Davis House was built about 1880 by J. H. P. Davis, son of Kinchen Davis, who escaped death by drawing a white bean in the famous Ordeal of Texans in the 1842 Mexican Conflict. As a Jaybird leader, Davis, who lived from 1851 to 1927, prevented lynchings in the Jaybird-Woodpecker War of the 1880s. He owned much land and livestock. Built of cypress and white pine, the house has many fine details unusual in its era. In 1947 it was given to Polly Ryon Memorial Hospital, which was named for Davis' mother-in-law.
