Legend connects Bentonville to the James Gang, which is believed to have robbed Craig and Son's General Store in this neighborhood and, disappointed to find only $200 after James T. Craig had his son Charles deposit most of the store's cash in the bank across the street, took fine new suits and hats as well. The robbery is believed to have occurred at 113 S. Main Street, now the home of LAWCO and listed on the Historical Register as the Craig building. The gang, said to have included at least six members—the James brothers, the three Younger brothers, and probably Clell Miller—escaped and rode back north after a crime spree that had included robbing a train at Gads Hill, Missouri, on January 31, 1874, a couple of days before Bentonville. They crossed back into Missouri at Caverna, possibly stopped at a branch in Jacob's Cavern near Jane, Missouri, and later rode to a favorite hideout in a bluff shelter near the Elk River. Several of these men were later shot by citizens of Northfield, Minnesota, during the gang's final raid, and their legend continued in the area when Hollywood came to Pineville, Missouri, in 1939 to make a movie about their exploits.
