Jacksonville was settled by Julian Smart, who planted the first garden and orchard in Tuolumne County in the spring of 1849. It was named for Colonel A.M. Jackson, who opened the first trading post in 1849. In 1850, it was the second largest town in the county and a gathering center for thousands of miners working the rich bed of the Tuolumne River.
